Unlike its parent volume, "The Kingdon Field Guide to African Mammals," the pocket guide includes indexes to both scientific and English names, a distinct advantage in addition to its more compact size that facilitates use in the field while saving space in packing. Illustrations are sized to serve as well as those of the larger work, although descriptions are necessarily far more concise. A number of the range maps entail a frustrating compromise wherein the area of Africa included to effectively illustrate species distributions is so small as to require a more intimate knowledge of the continent's geography than many likely users will possess. This caveat notwithstanding, the pocket guide is the finest reference of its size.

Bought this to use on a field course through Kenya. It was easy to use and the pictures and descriptions were very helpful. Because it's a guide to ALL African mammals (rather than a regional book), it was sometimes overwhelming to the students- but there are maps that can be used. I would argue that it doesn't really fit very well in a pocket, but I don't think I'd carry it in my pocket anyway. Would definitely recommend to anyone going on safari!

This compact little guide is a condensed version of The Kingdon Field Guide to African Mammals by the same author. That book is easily the best overview of African mammals, with detailed info on each species/genus, but it is not really practical for use as a field guide (see my review of it).This book contains the same illustrations arranged in a format that makes them handier for actual identification in the field.It is very comprehensive, covering every single species of African mammals with the exception of bats, rodents, insectivores, elephant-shrews and hyrraxes, which are usually represented by one species for each genus. But every single genus is represented, and of rodents, every species of squirrel is dealt with separately.Maps and brief info on distribution and ecology of each taxon is now to be found on the pages facing the illustrutions.The latter are a mixed bag, as in the original work: while most are quite good, even excellent and life-like, others are quite awful, either showing animals with stiff, straight limbs/bodies as if drawn with a ruler (like the Crowned Monkey) or in highly unnatural positions (like the Potto with the limbs twisted out, or the Cheetah standing up like a circus horse).All things considered, this is easily the best field guide to mammals of Africa, though for more in-depth information on each taxon, you may still want to have the original book in addition to this one.

Excellent guide. Pictures and descriptions are very helpful in identifying the animals you see in the wild. Interesting, but a bit overwhelming before you actually go to Africa. Information on social behavior, eating habits, geographic locations, etc. is also interesting and educational. This is an older edition, but I found the pictures to be superior to the newer "expanded" edition.

This is a nice general field guide, and is small enough to travel with.

This book has good illustrations, brief but adequate text, and maps of ranges. 272 pages, 13.5 ounces -- good for traveling. Kingdon (or his publisher) calls it a "pocket guide," but that's true only if you have big pockets. It will easily fit into pocket of day packs, though, and most users will probably have such a pack in the field anyway.

The reason I give this three stars is because it balances my love for the commentary with the print size of the book.Matthew Henry is, in my opinion, one of the most amazing commentators of the Bible I have ever read. He has a great devotional style and shows a great knowledge of what God's words says and means. He is easy to read and does a fine job of explaining even the difficult passages. You may not agree with everything he says, but then again, since when has anyone ever agreed 100% with anyone?On the other hand, you better have a magnifying glass to read this particular edition. The type is EXTREMELY small and sometimes very hard to read. I still use this edition but if I ever run across an edition of the complete commentary that has far bigger type, I will definitely get it and retire this one. If anyone knows of a bigger-type complete commentary (even if it is multi-volume), please respond to this and let me know.

Bought the complete edition, covers every detail with clarity. The more concise one is good for reference but this larger one you can read all the way through nearly as a Bible itself with Matthew, as though walking through the greatest timeline of history. He makes plain and wise comments, I happily recommend it. All the scriptures are in Bold & before every book is a summary.Only had it for a day, was led here by Charles Spurgeon to read it in a year. I already can see this is worth 5 stars. The print and book quality is the best they could do without making it too many volumes while keeping it at a very low price. Love it

Although somewhat antiquated language by today's standards, the MH commentary is by far one of the best commentaries out there. It has far more practical application than many of today's modern commentaries, and does not get bogged down in theological discussions that can be daunting to the everyday reader and student of the Bible. I highly recommend Matthew Henry's commentary to anyone who is looking for a companion to the Bible in order to deepen their understanding of God's Holy Word.

Love this 6 volume set .. I have lived on this earth for 72 years&have seen much as well as experienced much&have come to the conclusion: OUR CREATOR, God Himself is the ONLY One that can fix things ... Ancient words for modern messes worked over 5,000 + years ago;still VERY applicable today through His spoken Word;gospel of John3:16 ~ <>~ !

This is the most helpful and practical commentary I have ever read. I appreciate technical commentaries for sermons and such, but this really is the icing on the cake. It brings it all together with great application. I use it almost every day as I have my devotions and it has opened my eyes to the importance of slowing down and considering the text.

If you ever want a detailed and comprehensive perspective on a passage of scripture then this is your book. I rarely leave this book without learning something new and insightful. Sure the print is small, but considering the wealth of information at your fingertips, a little eye strain is well worth the trouble.

Matthew Henry hardly needs another review. Three hundred and five years of Christians have read this and used it with profit. Other commentaries may have more text-critical uses, but for application and living, this remains famous for a reason.This edition (published by MacDonald) has decently sized print, pages that are not too thin, and contains the text of the Bible passages, interspersed with the commentary. I have a single-volume edition and bought this because the print in the single volume version (Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Whole Bible: Complete and Unabridged in One Volume 2nd edition by Henry, Matthew published by Hendrickson Publishers Hardcover) is minuscule and hard to read. I am quite pleased with this purchase.Highly recommended.

Every time I would look at commentary regarding hard to understand scripture I always resonated with Matthew Henry. So, I decided to purchase this gigantic book for myself. I love his deep insight, simple wisdom and logic in explaining and expanding on the scriptures. It was written many years ago so the literary style is not what we are used to which makes it hard to follow. It just takes a little more time and concentration but it's well worth it.There is no substitute for reading and meditating on God's pure word and gaining insight and wisdom through prayer and the Holy Spirit but this commentary and another one called Believer's Bible Commentary by William Mcdonald are my go to books for bible study.

I purchased this book at the request of and for the use of a grandniece who is studying computer science. I assume she must give it a five-star rating or she wouldn't want to own her own copy. I ordered it via Amazon and had Amazon arrange direct shipping to her. R. Woodworth

This book will in a very short time span teach you even some advanced features of ray-tracing. Unfortunately, it is simply to high paced, unless you are an advanced programmer with some knowledge of ray-tracing already.

It's a classic book, worth to buy and read. It would be nice If the code printing is clearer and more pictures.

The book "Realistic Ray Tracing" contains a description of all important ray tracing techniques and a guideline to the implementation of a ray tracing program. The book covers the basics like ray-object intersection, lighting, viewing and materials, but the major part of the text deals with advanced techniques monte carlo integration, antialiasing, soft shadows or path-tracing.The book contains only some 150 pages and each technique is thus described in 3 to 10 pages. The language used is clear and the book is very readable. It is very easy to read the whole book or just to pick a specific chapter and get an idea of one topic. The main focus of this book is the implementation of a ray tracer. All techniques are described in a way that enables the reader to easily code them. All the math needed is provided and procedural pseudo code fragments are given in some chapters. Despite being quite a thin book, the selection of topics is very good and most of the important ray tracing techniques are covered.There are some problems with this book though. First of all, this book does not describe the ray tracing algorithm very well. Readers completely unfamiliar with this method might have some difficulties understanding the overall picture. This is also true for the implementation part. Although a lot of techniques and basics are explained, the author does not cover the implementation of a ray tracing framework.Some of the chapters are simply too brief. The mathematical background is covered but not explained. In the first chapter, the author introduces 4-dimensional homogeneous coordinate systems without explaining them. This could have been done in 1-2 pages and would have helped to better understand a lot of the transformations used throughout the book. And the chapter about triangle meshes only deals with different approaches to store a triangle mesh. No word about the triangulation process itself.Overall, this is a lovely book that covers a lot of ray tracing techniques, but is is no introduction to this method.

The book started off amazingly well. I was very excited to find out what next. The book did a good job of introducing the technique and giving hints on how to implement them. After the first several chapters, however, the implementation gets left behind and the reader is given a series of chapters on disjointed topics. The author who was weaving such a beautiful web toward the beginning stopped doing everything that make the book great. There was no longer any explanation about how one topic led to the next and implementation was no longer touched upon. This book is an adequate introduction to the concepts but I found it sorely lacking when it came to help on implementation.

I had begun making a ray tracer just a few days before reading this book. At the time, I had already read through quite a few articles regarding the basics, and some vector arithmetic (which I was completely ignorant of before hand). I had a basic ray tracer only capable of shadows and rendering spheres and planes. I skimmed through this book hoping to find algorithms for reflections, diffusion, and refraction. I was absolutely amazed! The algorithms were clearly explained in a way that was easy to implement them into my tracer. I later read through the book more thoroughly and found out about techniques I had never heard of before such as soft shadows and sampling. However, there are some issues. First of all, the ending is more of jumbled mentions of theory, rendering it much less practical. I would also agree with other reviewers that this is NOT a book for readers that are unfamiliar with ray tracing in general or high level mathematics. In short, this book will waste no time giving you all of what you need for a ray tracer and nothing that you don't.

I have to second the person who said that the people who recommended this book never actually sat down and tried to implement the material inside of it. The book is riddled with mistakes, and the errata online keeps growing by the minute.Shirley (and Morley) are brilliant and pioneers in the field, but they write a book like any hardcore professor you've taken in college would have written it --- dry, coarse and assuming of much knowldege. A reviewer here mentioned "disjointed" and that actually is an understatement.I am by far no means a graphics person, but being a college graduate with at least two classes in graphics under my belt, I expected to just shoot through this book. This was definitely not the case.Beware of slim and short books, and this is one of them. I found the classic "An Introduction To Ray Tracing", Andrew S. Glassner (another genuis) to be much better. Also, I've heard great things about Matt Pharr/Greg Humphreys "Physically Based Rendering -- from Theory to Implementation". That one's currently in the mail shipping to my house.No offense to Mr. Shirley -- however please let edition 3 of this book (assuming there will be one) cater to a wider audience, such as myself.I wonder if the first edition was better...

I purchased this book for a graduate class. It supported what I learned in the class very well. Tucker has a way with words though he can be long winded. He is clear on his biases which I find appealing in a historic writter. It does make you think about how our society came to this state and the toll we are still estracting from it.If you don't mind how slow it can be to read at times this is a must read for those intrested in enviromental history.

I think that this book should be required reading for all AMerican and most British students. Know the facts about where certain good originated in their consumption patterns and expand in your own thinking through this college text.

As a professional tour guide, I have done lots of research on Harlem, and believe me, no other source provides so much information so concisely in such a useful format.The book is typical of Dolkart, a Columbia University professor who wears his erudition lightly. The history of the City, economic forces, changing architectural tastes, trends in race relations -- all these strands are woven together to offer a multi-dimensional view of the community.

This is yet another excellent title in the New York Landmarks Conservancy's series of brief but comprehensive guides to some of New York City's most important historic districts.Thanks to the generosity of the American Express Company, this beautifully produced volume is that rarest of commodities in today's book industry: a genuine bargain.The entire text is printed on glossy stock, providing excellent definition for the book's many period photographs and line drawings.Dolkart, the author of several other highly regarded New York City guidebooks, and Sorin have provided extremely insightful essays which trace, in brief, Harlem's evolution as a black metropolis. Their discussion of David King's Model Houses and Striver's Row is an exemplary integration of architectural, social, and cultural history in a nutshell.The authors cast their net widely in only 138 pages, though perhaps not widely enough in a few cases. Thus, for instance, one can visit the home of Vertner Tandy, best remembered as the architect of Villa Lewaro, the Hudson River estate of Madame C. J. Walker. Yet, inexplicably, there is not a mention of her daughter A'lelia's mansion at 108-110 West 136th St., immortalized as the "Dark Tower" in some of the literature of the Harlem Renaissance. Perhaps the twin brownstones no longer exist.The numerous and well-chosen historic photographs of outstanding Harlem buildings and personalities are extremely enlightening. But they may leave some readers wishing for a few contemporary views short of actually visiting the sites in person.These are minor criticisms, however, when set next to the considerable achievements of this handsome, elegant, and easy-to-use introduction to a neighborhood known to all Americans but quite likely visited by too few.

I have been using Excel for more than 10 years. I don't consider myself as a beginner. Lately, my work requires me to do some more advanced Excel formula stuffs. I search Amazon and bump into this book and purchase a used one. I didn't realize the size of this book till I receive it....it is pretty thick with 864 pages of materials. Then I realize my 10+ years of Excel experience is nothing but scratching the surface of Excel's formula function only :-(This book covers tons of materials. For sure, I don't have that much time to read through this book from cover to cover. I use this book like a reference manual. The writing is very straightforward and easy to follow. Quite some examples are provided for each subject to help readers to understand each technique. I got this book for just couple of days, I already have learned quite some new tricks for my jobs. A well-worth investment for the money. I definitely will recommend this book to my co-workers.

As usual, Walkenbach does another outstanding job by providing a comprehensive book on Excel. If you can get through it (I wouldn't recommend a straight up read), but the techniques and examples are complete and well worth putting some effort into the material.I do miss the CD that used to be delivered in the back flap of his work. This provided many examples and quick references at the workstation without lugging out the book. Many authors are providing this in ebook format too which would be greeat.

I have been an Excel user for nearly 30 years and I learned a lot from this book. Obviously too much to absorb even in one week, but anyone working with the book over time will master a wide range of formulas and develop skills (such as manipulating dates) that are essential for every financial model builder. Along with the book, users get access to the actual spreadsheet examples discussed in the book via the Wiley website. These are very useful, but the discussion in the text usually provides enough information for readers to construct these examples on their own, which is a great way to master the concepts.

So much here, so little time. The more this book shows you, the more you realize your don't know. A Pandora's box for Excel nerds.

Covers it all, Formulas from A-Z. Even gets you started with VBA. Great book for reference, or to read end to end. Maintains it's value with a great appendix as well. Decided to get Power Programming with VBA after reading, and within 2 weeks of nightly reading I was able to create Workbooks with basic User Forms and advanced functions.Definitely recommend for Beginners and Intermediate Excel users looking to establish or enhance their skills.

Great value as the quest for analysis grows more complicated...so much data to distill into meaning...Excel moves with the volume of data like no other software can...

Book includes cool text formulas that I copied that allowed me to almost instantly normalize address data for analysis. Too many neat snippets of information to mention. If you own this book and your fellow office worker's don't, you will soon be the go to person for excel tasks.

Great reference book. I learned some good formulas from this book. Its very dense and thick to read. So I suggest using more of a reference then as a from to back type of book.
