A gritty, pull no punches suspense with both serial murders and police corruption. The main character really does have his back against the wall but comes out of it with integrity and closure - of sorts. The support cast could have had more of a showing, but in respects it makes sense they didn't. We really did need to follow the path of one guy who had to deal with so much: an ex partner who had tried to kill him, bosses who he could not trust, a cold case of epic proportions and a failed marriage he found it hard to give up on. I sense this may well lead to further novels starring Jon Stanton, and if there are further offerings, I will be more than interested in tagging along.Recommended to those who like their suspense novels to show the darker side of human nature. It was well written and could easily become a film.

I started reading Victor Methos books with 'Neon Lawyer'.I've read every book available on Kindle and have come back to this first book in the Jon Stanton series after I realized I had not left any reviews. Shame on me. My only excuse is I loved them all so much, I read one after another, as quickly as I could download them. I grabbed many of Mr. Methos' books from Kindle Unlimited, which was a huge bonanza for me. I HIGHLY recommend his books, love his characters and the way Methos tells the story. Well plotted and researched. I'm looking forward to any new releases!

A very interesting, albeit strange book. I am an atheist and I thought that the author's Mormon/religious theme was quite interesting--I was not offended by his Mormon ideas like some were, probably because I do not find his religion stranger than all others. Most detective/crime stuff shows the "good guy" as a boozer, womanizer or similar and this one has a different take which I found to be interesting. And, also, the author is truthful enough to say that he does not know whether God exists, but God is "necessary" to him--refreshingly candid for a religious person! The story and writing is very "dark" and that is why I opened by saying it is strange--but sometimes strange is good.

Bought the print edition, which in the back has a license statement which states you cannot share or give away the book. I'm not sure that is even legal with a print edition, but it turns out not to be a worry, since 50 pages into it I am having trouble getting through it and would never torture someone else with it. Trash can it is. The characters and plot have failed to develop as well as in his other books. The print is teensy. At least the book is not oversize like some of his others.

Many of the free thrillers I find rather boring and badly written even if they get 4 and 5 star reviews, I guess I am rather picky. But one in ten turns out to be something else, and this is one of them! I would give it 4½ stars if I could (saving 5 for the very best!)It is well written, the plot is fascinating and complex but not totally impossible and it is not religious. True, the detective is a Mormon, but that only adds to his character because it is part of who he is and it affects the way he lives. I also makes him rather unusual, how many detectives are there who do not drink (if they aren't recovering alcoholics) smoke, swear and have sex?Your know you're hooked to a charachter when you want to know what happens to him next. This story ends with a question mark, making you wait for a next book, will he patch it up with his ex or will something develop with the colleague?Recommended to those who enjoy a well written thriller and can tolerate a few references to the Mormon Church!

I like Victor's style. I met his work with the Neon Lawyer and the Invisible Client. Those books are fantastic. No need for dirty details at all. This Stanton book is not what I would like to read. I give up on this series. I will stick to the lawyer's series. Those I can even read them to my teenager nieces.

Really enjoyed this book one of The Jon Stanton series. Excellent Plot well developed charactersEven enjoyed that the character is a Mormon an observant one and is surrounded with all of these seedy characters and he seems to really make no judgements. Has unique relationship with the ocean. I was interested in doing the rest of the series however they are not in the audible format I spend most of my time commuting so will not be following up until they are.

WOW, what a great read, well written, some swear words, but so worth a read. This may be Victor Methos's first book but it won't be his last. Give it a try, the plot starts from first page to the very last page, the ending also was great. Give it a try, you will enjoy it.
