Being a post LASIK damaged patient with corneas forever ruined, this book was recommended to me by someone with similar post lasik problems. This book gives you a deep understanding on how some doctors just seem to care about easy and fast money rather than a long term eye health on their patients. Kudos to the author on exposing the dark side of opthalmology, being an opthalmologist himself! I guess this book gives you an important lesson as a patient; always get a second, third, or even multiple medical opinions when it involves your eyes, or better yet, avoid the surgery if possible.

How can a doctor do what was done in this true story. And how can a committee be the hero.Well researched (and experienced) book and a story well told.Piecing together the threads of a story about a physician out of control and concerned almost exclusively with money and legacy, and without a concern for people, Dr Harbin shares the experiences of both ethical Physicians who stood up for what is right (and suffered) and disconnected doctors who look to balance their own benefit and success with what their greater responsibility is to their group, or doing the right thing.Thank you for telling this story!!!!

It is written well enough that one can read between the lines as to the awful things that happened at Emory and how greed preempted ethics and the execution of good, safe medicine.

I downloaded this book not knowing really what it was about other than a surgery done on the wrong eye of a patient. Having been in the ophthalmology field for 10 years it grabbed my interest quickly. How could I have known that I'd gain so much more respect for a doctor that I already respected more than any other I've worked with.Dr David Campbell is one of the most honest, well-respected ophthalmologists I know. This book served to want to make me a better technician and gave me reason to respect the man I've worked with & known for 10 years so much more than ever before!I suggest this to anyone in the medical field, especially ophthalmology!Thank you Dr Harbin for telling this story that very obviously needed to be told!!!!

“Waking up Blind” was written by my personal eye doctor. I have known Dr. Harbin for over 14 years. I know from experience that he is the proverbial ‘good doctor’; and he is a genuinely good human being. ‘Waking up Blind’ is a shocking, almost unbelievable story. However, I trust it is all true because I am personally acquainted with Dr. Harbin. His book is a must-read for anyone who has eyes!

This is an amazing story that is a must read for both healthcare professionals and patients alike. As a physician I know all to well that abuse of power can be a lethal mix in the quality care of patients. Unfortunately mistakes are a part of healthcare. However the stunning abuse of power that went unchecked with such an obvious physician out of control. Thank you Dr Harbin for presenting this story in such a succinct and elegant way. This should be a required reading for everyone taking care of patients as well as medical students.The lay person I think might have more difficulty following the sequence of events primarily because most would find it hard to believe physicians would act like many in the book. However after reading this book I expect patients wll better able to protect themselvesGreat read!

Ophthalmologists and local grandees behaving badly in Atlanta. Old letters. Depositions. Does this sound promising? Tom Harbin has transformed such potentially leaden non-fictional material into a narrative that is as difficult to put down as the best sort of Grishamite thriller. In fact, I didn't put the book down. I read it straight through, finishing at about 5 AM and paying dearly the next day. I confess to knowing a couple of the major participants, and I've had my own very unhappy collision with a branch of the Emory Clinic in Atlanta that seemed to be, like the Emory department that Dr. Harbin anatomizes, the medical equivalent of a puppy mill. My own contact with Emory medicine, though, was not a plus in terms of my wanting to read the book. Indeed, I had to overcome an aversion to revisiting this environment. I was able to do so because of this book's narrative power: a cumulative portrait of evil emerges along with that of the growing corruption of a scientific/academic institution that pulls all manner of political levers to cover up and protect that evil and to punish the courageous few who persist in pursuit of truth and common decency. Among the latter are two heroes whose careers are derailed, and the book is dedicated to them. A third hero is the narrator/implied author, Dr. Harbin. No doubt he is on dangerous legal ground making such revelations, but he seems to hold nothing back. I was initially inclined to say that his riveting prose, appropriately, is surgical, but it is more than that. Our Founding Fathers revered as their models the unpretentious courage, lucidity, and incorruptibility of the leaders of the ancient Roman republic. I am certain that these Romans as well as our Founders would recognize Dr. Harbin as a peer.

Two men, one with a hunger for power and money and the other with a thirst for glory beyond his abilities systematically destroyed the medical achievements for which Emory's ophthalmology department was renowned. They created a web of lies and deceit wrecking lives and careers and taking the institution down with them. To this day the school has not regained the heights it once enjoyed. Justice was slow or never arrived at all for some of the victims of the egregious overreach and astounding medical malpractice they suffered. A gripping and true tale of institutional corruption bound to open the eyes of any person who may need or has had eye surgery.
