Lee opposed the Union Army of the Potomac in the Eastern Theater of Operations. When Joseph E. Johnston was wounded on 31 May 1862 at the Battle of Seven Pines, he was temporarily succeeded by G.W. Smith. On 1 June 1862, Robert E. Lee took command. The name "Army of Northern Virginia" dates from Lee's assumption of command. It was originally composed of 11 infantry divisions, J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry (a brigade of 11 regiments), and W.N. Pendleton's artillery (six brigades). The infantry divisions were grouped under the command of Jackson, Longstreet, and Magruder in 1862.
