From the Inside Flap
Suicide would appear to be the last taboo. Even incest is now discussed freely in popular media, but the suicide of a loved one is still an act most people are unable to talk about--or even admit to their closest family or friends. This is just one of the many painful and paralyzing truths author Carla Fine discovered when her husband, a successful young physician, took his own life in December 1989. And being unable to speak openly and honestly about the cause of her pain made it all the more difficult for her to survive. With No Time to Say Goodbye, she brings suicide survival from the darkness into light, speaking frankly about the overwhelming feelings of confusion, guilt, shame, anger, and loneliness that are shared by all survivors. Fine draws on her own experience and on conversations with many other survivors--as well as on the knowledge of counselors and mental health professionals. She offers a strong helping hand and invaluable guidance to the vast numbers of family and friends who are left behind by the more than thirty thousand people who commit suicide each year, struggling to make sense of an act that seems to them senseless, and to pick up the pieces of their own shattered lives. And, perhaps most important, for the first time in any book, she allows survivors to see that they are not alone in their feelings of grief and despair.

This book re-tramatized me. She describes several suicide methods and goes in VERY graphic details, which adds abosolutely NOTHING to the story. Why she chose to write like this I have no idea. I now have to process these horrible images in my head along with all the grief and suffering I am already experiencing from this tragedy. It is very upsetting.
A good friend killed himself a few weeks ago and I found out only because his sister in law posted the info for his Facebook friends. Because I'm a psychiatric RN with 30 plus years of experience and I knew that he was "high risk" this devastated me. I looked for some help in books but this one basically was useless for me. The author spend many pages describing how different folks killed themselves which was of no interest to me - I didn't find any practical advice at all - and it seemed to also be focused on family members rather than friends of the deceased. I will just have to keep looking I guess.
Written by a woman whose husband committed suicide, this would not be a good book for someone who lost a child that way. It was OK, but I had bought it with the possibility of giving it to a friend whose 21 year old son had just taken his own life, but the focus of this book seemed to be more about losing spouses or parents. I'm glad I read it first. Having said that, it would be a good book for someone in the same situation as the author.
I bought this book because I'm a survivor of a loved one's suicide. This is the stories of other survivors. It opened my eyes to the fact i'm not alone, but it was painful as hell to read. I really, REALLY recommend this if your friend or patient is a survivor, because this really will open your eyes to all the well intentioned hurtful things people say to us.
FINALLY! I've spent a lot of time trying to just move past this without seeking help from people who understand, therapist or books. This is the first thing I've come across from someone who gets it. It is graphic, but honestly that's what I needed. I didn't want to hear clinical, religious or uplifting- just to have someone understand how crazy you feel and let's face it- what we all feel is graphic. I will be seeking out local support group and individual therapy thanks to this book.
My friend "B" recommended this for my other friend. "B" says that if only she would have read this sooner after her husband committed suicide, that she would have known a lot more about her own feelings. "B" says this book is a must for spouse suicide survivors. "B" says many of the books out there deal with your childrens' suicides etc but that you need this book to deal specifically with the spouse.
This book helped me realize I wasn’t alone in all my despair and the emotions I have experienced after my brother’s death. I could relate to something every single person had to say who shared their stories. I literally wanted to remove myself from society because I felt like I was going crazy and I didn’t want to have to talk to anyone or explain anything, I felt like I was damaged goods somehow and that I wouldn’t be able to return to life around other people. This book seriously helped me get through the worst part of my experience of losing my brother to suicide. Definitely a Godsend.
I’ve read several books and literature following the suicide of my 21 year old daughter. I felt this book was most knowledgeable and beneficial to me in helping me understand the aftermath of suicide. I highly suggest this and will be reading again. It brings some comfort knowing there are others out there who are still angry at our loved one and desperately saddened that she is gone. I miss you so much, Gabrielle. Will see you soon. Love you mucho, mucho. Besitos!
