This book is very helpful for learning about the NT church and it's leaders.It is a "chronological-sociological-historical synopsis of the entire NT." Frank Viola does an excellent job weaving the NT in chronological order.He gives the date,author,and purpose of the letters and books.The notes and Scripture in the End Notes are educational."Sharpening the Focus" is another very informational tool in this book.On the sociological side,Mr. Viola details the living conditions,health problems(eyesight for one),literacy rate,and average life-span of the citizens in some areas of the Roman Empire(Rome and Galatia for instance).Of all the aspects of this book,the chronology is the most helpful!He defines the two wings of Pharisaism very well.I didn't know that the order of the Pauline letters was determined by their length!Also of interest to me was the origin of the Gospel of Mark.The author does a great job in the definition of the members of the early church.In Antioch they were first called "Christians" by the Greeks.They actually called themselves "the Way".In Palestine they are called "Nazarenes".I listed a few tidbits of info that I found interesting.There is more in this book.Frank Viola did an excellent job with this book and succeeded in making the NT much more easy to understand.This book is very easy to read and beneficial to any collection or library.

Very illuminating. I wanted to get on here and recommend this book a year after I read it because I keep telling people about it. Context is SO important and that is lost in the way our New Testaments are arranged. This book is a very easy & quick but necessary read to really understand what is going on in the NT. I would go so far as to say that this book would make you a general scholar in the area of Biblical Study and culture of the New Testament in the time it takes you to read it. This coming from a former paid youth pastor and worship leader...it really is that good! My biggest surprise? I was actually sad that I'd reached the end of the book, it was so enlightening and expanded even my knowledge and understanding that I wanted to keep reading and keep learning. Would love if Frank decided to do one for the Old Testament too.Seriously tho, get this book. Should be compulsory for all believers due to its ability to keep us focused on the context rather then extracting verses out of context. I had several "A-Ha" moments reading this book, and things I've always kinda read into passages not having the proper background understanding. It made me feel closer to God. And THAT is ALWAYS a good thing, or shall I say, a GOD thing!

I have been a catholic all my life and as a Catholic am sad to say I was not very well versed in Biblical knowledge. At best I know the basics we had a bible in my house that collected dust on the shelf. I may have picked it up twice in growing up and could not make heads or tails of the do'eth and don'teth and thou'eth and thee'eth. But I attended Sunday school(CCD) till 9th grade and that was the end of my religious education as most Catholics do if that. Confirmation is graduation and as long as you attend mass, past the envelope hit the confessional once a year...they'll save you a spot in God's kingdom pretty sad. Since then I have dabbled in reading the Bible for the last 16 yrs. reading bits and pieces of certain books and epistles in their entirety. It said a lot of wonderful things, inspired things but tying it all together and making any kind of sense of it all is not really possible. There are so many things to keep in mind when reading something that is thousand of years old and has the history this manuscript has. To "go shopping" through this document cannot possibly give you any sense of the message the people who wrote this book were trying to convey. It is the complete message that the book is the sum of that is where all the richness and history that this book contains. In just reading the book with no afterthought as to who wrote what and why and who it was written to and under what circumstances etc. it is like looking at the surface of a lake and never sticking your head under the water to amazing world beneath. Mr. Violas book for me was like I had never read the New Testment before. His guide was like opening the shades, the door and sunroof to a dark room. I could not put this book down or the Bible that went along with it. It was an "Epiphany" a quantun leap in understanding a religion I thought I was fairly familiar with and left me hungering for more. I have for quite sometime been seeking the truth of God's message undiluted by "The Church" who I am afraid to say has done more to move people away from Jesus than to bring closer than. You realize how much cloak and dagger and undermining the early Church went through and how they were attacked from within and without but unless you understand its history and its effort to keep the Jesus message true to its source and what it had to contend with, you really cannot grasp what your faith is all about. I would agree with every positive review that has been posted about this book they are all factual and true. The only thing I would reccommend in getting this book is having a Bible that is written in language you are comfortable with and can grasp. I have found the Catholic Living Bible the easiest Bible to understand. Mine does not have a concordance but I have an NIV that does that I referred to as I read and took notes. I finished reading it on the 1st of the year but will be re-reading it again right away. Anyone who has any desire of understanding God's great plan should spend whatever money necessary to purchase this book...it opened my eyes and heart. I am glad I read this book. It really put the New Testament books into historical sequence for me. If fact, I marked my Bible with the dates of the writing of each book. Part of the project was to read the books of the New Testament in order. It helped me see how the early church developed as the apostles wrote and did their mission trips. One particular fact I will not forget is that Nero did not start his persecution of the church until eight years after the book of Romans was written. That is of particular value since many comment that Romans was written in light of ongoing persecution by Nero. Not so. Anyone interested in church history, which should be most any believer, would find this book useful. I recommend it.
