First-time author Jenny Williams novel, 'The Atlas of Forgotten Place' is a story about ex-pat aid workers and their African co-workers caught up in the conflict with the Lord's Liberation Army (LRA) in Northern Uganda. The story is dramatic and face-paced, the prose well-crafted. The aid workers' thinking is believable, I recognize their flashes of idealism, naiveté, and cynicism. I would have hoped to learn more the thinking of the Acholi people, the object of suspicions of the Ugandan Army, confined for years to camps, and the target of ultra-vicious attacks by the LRA. As the protagonists travel in the forests of Northeastern Congo, I would have hoped to understand something of the environment, and of the LRA, and it's warrior-spirit-Christian fusion religion. All-in-all, it's a good book if you don't know the region, but it left me wanting something deeper.

Jenny D. William’s debut novel Bitter Root had me captivated from the first sentence. Based on personal experience, this work of historical fiction is raw, exposing the underbelly and the aftermath of guerrilla warfare in Africa.Sabine, a former aid worker, is forced to return to war-torn Africa when her niece, Lily, goes missing. Sabine travels to Northern Uganda and comes in contact with Rose Akulu, a recent escapee from the LRA, in search of her companion, Ocen. He vanished as well. Together, Sabine and Rose journey into the Congo in search of loved ones and uncover the illegal ivory trade that’s funding the militants. One gets the sense that author Jenny Williams wrote Bitter Root with a burning desire to shine a light on the civil war and human atrocity throughout the sub-Saharan continent. Through Sabine, Rose, Lily, Ocen, and a cast of lesser characters and interweaving subplots, the reader gets a first-hand account of a country torn apart through the eyes of oppressors and victims and the aid workers trying to put it back together. No other book goes straight to the heart of the African conflict quite like this one does.

This debut novel sparked a lively discussion in our bookgroup. Williams crafts an intriguing storyline that draws the reader into an aunt's search for her naive niece, a missing NGO worker in Uganda. Artful succinct prose, strong character development, and a deft hand with depiction of often conflicting emotions contributed to the "can't put this down" readability of the novel. The motivations behind hard choices the protagonists Sabine and Rose make in literally life or death situations will resonate with any reader. Drawing upon her own travel and work experiences in Africa, the descriptions of Ugandan life educate the reader about conflicts and the culture without seeming to lecture. And there are elephants! We look forward to reading more of Jenny Williams' work.

Jenny D. Williams' debut novel, The Atlas of Forgotten Places, is a novel of hope and despair that spans continents. The story is told through the eyes of a German aide worker and a young African woman who has escaped captivity by rebel forces. Williams has a talent for bringing the radically different worlds of both women alive while telling a story that keeps the reader riveted. The writing itself is to be savored. I highly recommend this book.

I found this book through a library list of the best books of 2017. I wanted to love it. It seemed very unique, very different than anything else out there right now. But, i found the jumping around of povs jarring and in some ways it was so constantly dark that I had to quit reading and couldn’t sustain the book for any length of time.I compliment the author on the scope of this book and see I am alone in my review. Everyone else loves it. Clearly this may be my own issue.

Every once in a great while you discover a book that not only delivers a gripping story but also informs you about history and current social/political problems. "The Atlas of Forgotten Places" engages readers on every level! The setting is Africa, and the novel is told from the perspective of two women – Sabine, a former Uganda aid worker, and Rose, abducted as a young girl by the Lord’s Resistance Army. Together, they search for their loved ones who have gone missing. Beautifully written, the book is skillfully plotted and emotionally powerful…a genuine page-turner. And it sheds needed light on a part of the world and terrifying challenges we rarely encounter. Jenny Williams is a natural-born storyteller and I eagerly await her next book.

I loved this book! It's a beautiful and compelling novel. Jenny D. Williams offers us beautiful writing, interesting characters, vivid imagery, historical geopolitical information and a compelling story. Part of me wanted to rush through to find out what happened, while another part of me wanted to read slowly and enjoy the beautiful writing. Every page is a pleasure to read. I highly recommend this book and promise that you won't be disappointed.

This skillfully crafted first novel immerses the reader into the culture and political conflict of Uganda as part of a suspenseful fast paced mystery that keeps you guessing until the final pages. The author’s vivid imagery paints pictures that take you into the story and will remain with you even after you have finished. The characters are carefully developed allowing the reader to know them completely, even their most carefully guarded secrets. This expert combination causes the reader to make an emotional investment that builds tension until the finish. A journey well worth taking
