In this book, Mr. Bauckham advances a case that the Gospels were written with eyewitness testimony as a basis. I think it is fair to say the author deals most extensively with the Gospel of Mark of the Synoptics and the Gospel of John as a separate case.This theory is not universally accepted, not without controversy and would place the authorship of the gospels at an earlier date than others accept. He further argues against theories that associate the authorship of the Gospels with schools of thought or that discount the weight of testimony as historically significant.Readers who are not biblical historians or deeply immersed in the arguments he addresses, as I am not, might well find his theory persuasive, as I did, but then having no context in which to fully evaluate them. His treatment of Mark as a translator of St. Peter is convincingly argued. Unlike another commenter, I found his argument that the Gospel of John, the "Beloved Disciple" and the Book of Revelations were not written by St. John son of Zebedee, but by John the Presbyter or John the Elder well argued, interesting and persuasive. Again, though, a proper evaluation would require a deeper knowledge of the subject than I or a casual reader possesses.I would remark that the author engages in some lines of argument and certain threads of reasoning that range widely from the subject at hand, and it is hard to believe such analysis contributes to the case he is making sufficient to justify the cost in readability. For that reason, parts of the book become obtuse and very dry, leaving the reader longing to return the point en main. In these instances, the author is more addressing the critics of his theories than the interests of the reader at large.I finish the book nonetheless edified, finding the Gospels read in a way I had not heard them until now.

This is a very significant book for New Testament historical studies. It gives compelling reason to trust that we have access, in the gospels, to reliable testimony from eyewitnesses (as opposed to "community traditions", as many liberal scholars propose). It's a college-level book, not necessarily something you take to the beach. (Well, I did bring it to the beach, but that makes me a nerd.)I've read a lot of material and books on the topic of "Is the Bible reliable?" and many things are repeated left and right. But this book has a lot of unique perspectives. Here's one: in the gospel of Mark, when Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus with the cross, the gospel gives a very peculiar description of Simon of Cyrene. It says that he was the father of Alexander and Rufus. (And you'll only find that in Mark.) So what's so special about this? Well, we have no clue who these 2 guys are. Why name them? We don't even know the name of the children of, say, Peter or any important leader of the NT. But we have the names of the kids of Simon of Cyrene? The most likely reason for their names to be included was that they were known to certain first century Christians. (Mark is saying, basically, "don't believe me? Go ask Alexander or Rufus"). There's a lot of that when you pay attention to names used in gospels.

This book is a scholarly argument for the gospels to be seen as historical eyewitness testimony in the same sense as other ancient historical sources. It succeeds in refuting the view the gospels evolved over time via the Christian community. But I personally wonder if the degree of sophistication used really needs to go beyond the level of argument found in sources like eyewitness-scriptures.org.

This academic tome was much more dense than what I bargained for. For the genuinely scholarly student it is probably really good. I bought into many of his premises, but not others. I was not convinced by his arguments that the Gospel of John is likely attributable to John the Elder for example.In short, I imagine it is an outstanding work, it was just beyond my reach. That's on me, not the author or his work.

Groundbreaking scholarly work. A very detailed, and at sometimes hard, but important read. I don't agree with his thesis on the author of John, but Bauckham succeeds in showing the canonical Gospels are best understood as based on eyewitness testimony,which can and should be trusted.

Delightful, difficult, totally rewarding book. Dr Bauckham's research and arguments are stable and rightly crafted. It is nice to find that the smart people are still helpful and Christian.

I spent eight years in higher education in theology/philosophy garnering a Masters of Divinity degree. I was schooled in the form critical method for those eight years, and there was always something that didn't quite resonate deep within me regarding that methodology. Unfortunately, not a single professor offered any sort of criticism of form criticism, and so I was left with more than a bit of discomfort in the theological education I received.Richard Bauckham cleared that discomfort in 510 pages with basic arguments that make sense and technical arguments which are pretty tedious in nature--although, admittedly, I believe there are a few stretches in these technical arguments. Those stretches are not enough, in my estimation, to disregard what Bauckham has done. I believe, he has successfully rebutted form critical biblical studies and offered a much better alternative: seeing and reading the Gospel narratives as stories based upon eyewitness testimony (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) and as a story written by an eyewitness (John).I believe every biblical scholar, pastor, priest, and interested Christian should take the time to wade through this tome.

A thought provoking and well researched book. It really made me rethink some of my long held views. Well worth the money and essential reading for scholars and non-scholars alike.
